INSTITUTE NEWS

Adapting to a new life and very different culture

IHEEM’s newest recruit, Professional Development Officer, Camelia Stan, grew up in western Romania, gaining her secondary education – and qualifying as a Telecommunication Technician – at The Railway Technological College in the city of Arad. Having joined the Institute’s Portsmouth Head Office in March, Camelia will be working closely with IHEEM Professional Development Manager, Zanna Mercer, on all aspects of members’ professional development. Very much still learning about IHEEM, its membership, and key activities (she was intrigued to learn that the Institute is older than the NHS), she is also studying for a Bachelor of Science degree in Business and Healthcare Management at Anglia Ruskin University in London. She currently combines two days at the University each week with three days at IHEEM Head Office. Longer- term – she will complete her degree in June 2025 – she says she would be keen to secure a non-clinical role in healthcare management. After completing her Baccalaureate Diploma as a Telecommunication Techician in 2007 at the Railway College in Arad – a city close to the Austrian and Hungarian borders where she grew up, her first job was as a Delivery Department Manager at a local Metro Cash and Carry. There her responsibilities included ensuring stock was safely and securely stored, setting prices based on demand and to achieve revenue targets, dealing with customer complaints, and training and supervising staff. She said: “Being my first job it was both exciting and quite challenging at times, but overall provided some great experience.”

College. With a flair for customer service and strong people skills, she loved the job, and spent almost a decade managing the café, successfully maintaining a five-star hygiene rating through diligent food and health and safety management, recruiting and training staff, and ensuring that her team provided outstanding customer service. Under her management, the café won two local Café of the Year awards, and was nominated for Hampshire Business of the Year in 2023. Camelia explained: “One of the café’s

After just under three years in the role, and with an older sister, Gabriela, living in Essex, who she had visited several times, and knew was enjoying life in the UK, she decided to broaden her horizons and experience life in a different country – taking up a role as an au pair in Stafford in England, where she lived for the next three years. Looking after a two-year- old with cerebral palsy, she was not only able to develop her English and wider communication skills, but also get used to a very different culture to the one she was accustomed to in Romania.

Café of the Year award winner Having become acclimatised to the UK, and with friends living in Portsmouth, she decided to move to the naval city in early summer 2014, securing a job as Assistant Manager at the independent Highbury Café in Cosham, close to Highbury

‘regulars’ was IHEEM COO, Tania Davies, who on discovering the degree I am studying for, and recognising that I was keen to further expand my experience, told me about the Professional Development Office role at Head Office. I applied, was interviewed, and was delighted to be offered the job. “Some of the activities of members tie in with elements of my BSc degree course. I’ve recently completed Level 5, covering subjects including human resource management; principles and practice of marketing; IT, innovation, and entrepreneurship in healthcare; health informatics; business finance, and service operations. I’m now looking forward to completing Level 6 over the next year, where modules include executing business strategy; leadership and change management, and contemporary issues in healthcare. The Head Office team here in Portsmouth are great, and have made me very welcome. I’m looking forward to meeting and dealing with IHEEM members, and attending some of the Institute’s events, over coming months, so that I can get a better feel for what IHEEM and its members do.” Fluent in Romanian, and with good Spanish language skills, Camelia enjoys travel, exploring new cultures, reading, and watching documentaries in her spare time, and is a keen baker.
