INSTITUTE NEWS Item five was to approve elections
to Council. Pete Sellars advised that nominations for the following seats that were due to retire from Council at the AGM had been received: Eddie McLaughlan of the Scottish Branch had agreed to stay on for a further year to assist in re-establishing the Scottish branch, and find a new Council representative for the next AGM. Both PL Yuen (Hong Kong Branch) and Paul Rodgers (London and South East Branch) had completed their first term of three years, and had agreed to continue for a further term, and were thus duly elected. Mark Williams of the West Midlands Branch had completed a term, and was stepping down. The Branch had nominated and elected Claire Hennessy to replace him on Council. Pete Sellars then read out the list of
Council members who would serve for the next 12 months: President: Alison Ryan; Nigel Keery (President-Elect) for Northern Ireland; Eddie McLaughlan for Scotland; Peter Davies for Wales; Alan Spraggon for the North East, Alistair Cameron for the North West; Simon Adamson for Yorkshire; James Chadwick for The East Midlands; Claire Hennessy for the West Midlands; Paul Rodgers for London; Richard Harris for the Southern Branch; Martyn Jeffery for the South West; Bill O’Reilly for the Republic of Ireland, and Dr P L Yuen for Hong Kong. Alison Ryan welcomed Claire Hennessy to Council, thanked Paul Fenton and Dr Yuen for agreeing to serve a second term, and also expressed her thanks to Mark Williams for his time on Council. Agenda item six saw a motion to
re-appoint Morris Crocker as IHEEM’s auditors unanimously carried, while in agenda item seven, Alison Ryan gave her President’s closing remarks, telling members about her continued work to support her ‘vision’ for the Institute:

Representatives from IHEEM’s Technical Platforms updated delegates on their Platform’s key recent activities at July’s IHEEM 2023 Authorising Engineers Conference at Epsom Downs Racecourse.
‘to inspire the engineering innovators of the future.’ She explained that there were four key areas where she wants to see inspiration at work – inspiring the younger generation to become healthcare engineers; inspiring ‘those at the forefront to ensure we get closer to achieving Net Zero carbon targets… by building and refurbishing more sustainably’; inspiring and attracting people into the NHS workforce, and inspiring those people involved with modernising and digitalising healthcare in terms of the delivery of care for patients, going forward. Alison Ryan thanked all for attending
the AGM, and in closing the meeting, asked members: n What events they think are required. n How IHEEM can build on partnerships.
Other business Alan Spraggon commented on the use and potential modernisation of IHEEM Head Office in Portsmouth to allow a small training facility with meeting rooms available. Julian Amey complemented
the Head Office team on its work, before raising a thought about how the Institute might best succession plan for volunteers. This led to a general discussion on how to involve volunteers. David Whiteley requested an update on
IHEEM’s relationship with IFHE Europe. Pete Sellars explained that there are two organisations: IFHE Europe and IFHE World, with the latter’s President, Canada’s Steve Rees, having been a keynote speaker at the end of day two of October’s Healthcare Estates 2023 conference. The IHEEM CEO explained that the Institute had strengthened its links with IFHE World, and that he now sits on the IFHE World Executive Committee. He went on to tell members IHEEM was removing all its connections to IFHE Europe due to concerns over potential misuse of members’ fees. Alison Ryan then closed the 2023 IHEEM AGM, thanking all of the Institute’s exhibitors, sponsors, members, and attendees, who make the annual Healthcare Estates event possible.
