Institute’s 2023 AGM looks back on an eventful 80th anniversary year

IHEEM’s 2023 AGM took place at lunchtime on 10 October last year at Manchester Central – the first day of Healthcare Estates 2023. During the meeting, senior figures including President, Alison Ryan, and CEO, Pete Sellars, updated attendees on a busy 80th anniversary year for the Institute, discussed a number of other key IHEEM events – including a 25th anniversary symposium in Hong Kong, and looked ahead to some key activities and initiatives planned in 2024 and beyond. HEJ editor, Jonathan Baillie, reports.

The President, Alison Ryan, chaired the meeting, and opened it by welcoming everyone to the 56th AGM. She then asked IHEEM CEO, Pete Sellars, to read out the notice of the meeting. The first agenda item was to approve the Minutes of the 2022 AGM, held on 4 October 2022. These were unanimously agreed as a true and accurate record, and signed by Alison Ryan. Agenda item two saw Alison Ryan give

her President’s report on the Institute’s performance over the previous 12 months, followed by the CEO’s update on current performance. She explained that during the year, IHEEM had seen continued growth in membership – with a 3% rise overall, a 12% increase in Company Affiliate membership, and technician and apprentice memberships also up. Over the past five years, there had been a 19% rise in personal, and a 25% increase in Company Affiliate, membership, respectively. Focusing next on events held during

the year, and the President said these had included the IET STEM Lego Challenge in April, the Wales Regional Conference in Cardiff, and the University and Healthcare Conference in Dublin, both in May, the Authorising Engineers Conference in July, a number of other regional Branch events and webinars, and the Healthcare Estates 2023 Conference in October, together with IHEEM’s 80th Anniversary celebrations. Touching on the Institute’s 80th

Anniversary, Alison Ryan explained that

Updating attendees on the Institute’s future, IHEEM CEO, Pete Sellars (right), highlighted the need to build on the support offered to apprentices and tradespeople throughout their careers.

a special celebratory evening had been held on the eve of Healthcare Estates 2023, 9 October, at the Science & Industry Museum in Manchester. Here a highlight was the showing of a promotional film, put together by the Head Office team in conjunction with a video and animation agency, which celebrates IHEEM’s ‘past, present, and future’.

Launch of two Technical Platforms Alison Ryan went on to explain that in April 2023, IHEEM had launched its Strategic Estates Management and Advisory Platform (SEMAP), which

will focus on healthcare planning, and currently has over 30 members – including Estates directors, academics, healthcare planners, engineers, equipment manufacturers, architects, and design advisors, as well as two Past-Presidents. One of the Platform’s key roles is to

provide feedback on updates to draft HBNs and HTMs, for example Health Building Note 00-03, on ‘Clinical and clinical support spaces’ (2023), prior to them being issued for wider public consultation. In July, meanwhile, IHEEM had launched its new Mechanical Technical Platform

An engaging tour of the museum’s Textile Gallery was open to all attendees at IHEEM’s 80th Anniversary event at the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester on the evening of 9 October.
