Dublin joint conference In May 2022, IHEEM held its first Irish and Northern Ireland Conference in Dublin. Paul Fenton dubbed the event ‘an outstanding success’; it was a culmination of some six years of design and planning, having been being postponed twice through COVID. In the autumn of 2021, meanwhile, the Institute, working with its partners at University College London’s Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction, and the European Health Property Network, presented a submission to the Wolfson Economics Prize 2021 entitled ‘A common language of design and planning for new hospitals’. While the submission was not successful, it finished in the top quartile, and – Paul Fenton noted – had encouraged considerable ongoing debate, so much so that the International Federation of Healthcare Engineering (IFHE) asked he and Pete Sellars to attend its global conference in Toronto in September 2022, where they presented on the subject to representatives from a number of countries across the globe. Paul Fenton said: “The feedback that was stimulated by this presentation was significant, with a high amount of interest from South American countries – including Brazil and Mexico, and from other countries – including South Africa, Canada, Germany, and Spain.” IHEEM has been asked to present at a number of webinars, and potentially to give an update report to the IFHE international conference in South Africa in 2024 on the progress made within this important area.
First National Healthcare Estates and Facilities Day Paul Fenton reported that in 2022 IHEEM had joined forces with a number of fellow professional associations to establish the first National Healthcare Estates and
Facilities Day – for 15 June each year. He explained that the day ‘celebrates the vital work delivered by our profession, and the positive impact the services that we provide have on patients and staff all year round’. He went on to thank the head office team for all its support over his two years as President, and looked forward to handing over to Alison Ryan, IHEEM’s first female President in its 79-year history, later in the meeting.
Chief Executive’s update Next, Pete Sellars updated attendees on some of the Institute’s key recent developments, mentioning a number of highlights. During the two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Institute had built and grown its membership by 12%, with the pandemic emphasising how vital IHEEM’s role is in facilitating

networking and ‘connection’, in line with its strapline, ‘Stay Connected, Keep Informed, Get Ahead’. With this key function in mind, IHEEM had ‘returned at pace’ to live events. The Institute had also developed a standard pricing structure for its own events, ‘making significant reductions to make them accessible and inclusive’, which in turn supported Company Affiliates who chose to invest in them. Pete Sellars said: “The Dublin, Manchester, and AE Conferences were all a great success, and next year (2023) we will build on that with further events, including in the East Midlands, Wales, and Ireland.” He noted that IHEEM had created its own CPD programme ‘to support the careers of members at all levels’, and had also supported its core objective around ‘encouraging the next generation of EFM leaders’, with the Faraday Challenge and the New Hospital Programme’s offer with the 2021/2022 finalists.
Strengthening the head office team He said: “Our focus continues to be how to add value for our individual members and Company Affiliates. A key priority is to strengthen the head office core staffing to support future demand and growth of the Institute. We have moved towards some really good transparency in terms of our Business Plan and Annual Reports, and our incoming President,
Pete Sellars said: “The Dublin, Manchester, and AE Conferences were all a great success, and next year (2023) we will build on that with further events, including in the East Midlands, Wales, and Ireland.”
