Apprenticeship standard is now approved for funding
IHEEM is delighted to announce that the Healthcare Estates Specialist Technician (HEST) Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard (HEJ – June 2021) has now been fully approved, and has been given Ministerial sign-off for funding. The Standard is now fully available for registrations (at

The Standard has been written around healthcare engineering, and is a core and options standard: n Option 1: Healthcare medical devices technician.
n Option 2: Healthcare estates technician.
Eileen Bayles, Regional Training & Development Manager at the Northern & Yorkshire NHS Assessment Centre, said: “The process has been very hard work, but at last to have an NHS-specific Standard is wonderful news, and very worthwhile, and, more importantly, needed for the NHS engineering environment. No Apprenticeship Standard that is available meets the complex needs of the NHS engineering environment, and a lot of work to make them fit was needed, so this approval is a great and positive step forward. I am grateful for all those who had input into the work to create the Standard, and I can’t wait to start using it with our apprentices.”
Wayne Carr, Chairman of the Northern & Yorkshire Assessment Centre, added: “To have this standard agreed is fantastic news for the NHS, as it allows apprentices up and down the country to be trained to the highest quality. Not only will the standard enable tradespeople to be trained to support frontline clinical services, but it will also enable greater

succession planning, with a constant stream of engineering managers with the skills that this training will provide. The pandemic has highlighted the vital importance of the Engineering and Clinical Engineering teams and the critical services they maintain; training highly skilled apprentices will be vital to this continuing in the future.”
Pete Sellars, CEO of IHEEM, said: “I want to thank Eileen, Wayne, and Simon Dennis at the Salisbury Procurement Hub for all their hard work in getting this much- needed apprentice standard developed and approved. IHEEM is committed to encouraging the next generation of healthcare EFM professionals, and this is a core objective in our 5 Year Business Plan. Developing and progressing the highly successful model in the North East into a national apprenticeship programme is a key element of our goals in delivering this objective. IHEEM remains dedicated to ensuring that all aspiring apprentices have access to the same opportunities that have been offered in the North East over many years. We look forward to keeping you updated as the programme advances”.
