We are still in a hugely unpredictable position in relation to the pandemic, and even when the industry has reached the other side, the way we view cleaning and hygiene will have transformed forever. It seems highly likely that programmes will be in place at least until this summer, which is why creating a sustainable cleaning schedule, which does not over- stretch provision, but still minimises risk, is so important. Indeed, with the level of productivity lost through illnesses such as cold and flu before the pandemic, there is a strong business argument for the benefits of these regimes staying in place too.


In such a time of uncertainty, clear and flexible planning is central to ensuring that the necessary work can go on without risking the health of frontline workers and the public. Gaining a comprehensive understanding of building work and the risks involved is the only way that clinical and non-clinical activity in healthcare facilities can go on in a safe and sustainable manner. Using risk assessments to inform hygiene programmes is a simple and effective way to implement all the necessary changes, and create a robust building management plan with the resilience to withstand whatever is thrown at it over the coming months and years.
