Welcome to this ‘online only’ issue of Health Estate Journal, which, as usual, includes a combination of the latest industry, product, and ‘issues’-related news, and feature articles on subjects ranging from how hospitals might be better designed in future to cater for increasing ‘digitalisation’ of services, to how healthcare facilities can make parking as seamless and efficient as possible for all. One of the major casualties of the past 16 months has been the events sector, with many conferences and exhibitions facing postponement or cancellation. With a significant proportion of the UK population now vaccinated against the coronavirus, however, things are looking brighter for ‘live’ events, and this issue also includes news from IHEEM and Step Exhibitions of plans for a ‘hybrid’ Healthcare Estates 2021 conference and exhibition from 18-22 October this year. IHEEM and the event’s co-organisers have had a tough task in determining how best, or indeed whether, to proceed with the annual flagship event this year, but with considerable support for some form of 'live' element from the many individuals and companies canvassed in a recent survey, have decided to hold a five- day ‘online only’ conference, combined with a two-day live and digital exhibition, running partly concurrently, at Manchester Central.

This course will, they hope, enable both exhibitors and potential visitors to make a considered and informed choice as to how they ‘attend’ the sector’s leading dedicated event for the healthcare engineering and health estate management sector this year – knowing that – whatever they decide – they will not miss out. This year’s Healthcare Estates will undoubtedly have a different look and feel, but many will be pleased to be able to meet again with their counterparts face-to-face and, in addition, if they choose to visit Manchester, to see and experience some of the latest innovations and advances from the wide range of suppliers to the sector on their exhibition stands. Those who feel more cautious, however, or cannot spare the time to attend the 2021 event in person, will be able to stream the conference content to a convenient location, or view it later at time to suit and still get a good feel for what exhibitors are showing. Further details on the conference – the programme is in development, the accompanying exhibition, and this year’s awards, will appear both in thus magazine, on the HEJ, IHEEM, and event (www.healthcare-estates.com) websites, and on social media, over coming weeks.

Our ever-changing world and flexible working regimes dictate a different way of thinking. In the words of Laura Spinney, in an article, ‘Hospitals without walls: the future of healthcare’, published in The Observer on 2 January 2021, “In the wake of COVID, doctors and designers are radically adapting their thinking about what a hospital can be and what it should deliver.”

What if you could control your healthcare space in such a way that you could make

more of your spaces fit your latest needs, or perhaps deploy unused space to free up pressure in other critical areas? For example: n Utilising ICU rooms for standard operations. n Developing flexible use wards, i.e. changing from recovery to pandemic-ready at short notice.

n Creating isolation rooms from unused spaces/ rooms in care facilities.

Trend Controls can help healthcare facilities deliver truly flexible space as required, with all the essential building control and ventilation strategies that go with it. In addition, our

controls can optimise the air quality in those critical areas for the enhanced wellness of patients, staff, and visitors. Trend’s full suite of solutions is designed to help you meet your healthcare demands, from air quality improvement checklists, to reducing healthcare-associated infections via controls, filters, cleaners, and UV cleaning – all of which can be centrally monitored and controlled locally or remotely.
