TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT IHEEM Mentor network
Being an active member of IHEEM, I participate in as many events and webinars as possible. The option to have an IHEEM mentor was a very welcome addition to my membership. The Institute has a wealth of experienced engineers with a variety of skillsets
Conduct, and to share detail of a broad range of valuable tools, models, and practices, to be utilised by a mentor. IHEEM mentoring is currently centred around providing support in the three following areas of professional development:
• Professional registration. • The Authorising Engineer process. • Career path and progression.
A key benefit to members embarking on a mentoring relationship through the Institute is exclusive usage of the MyIHEEM Mentoring recording system. The platform has been developed for easy recording of mentor and mentee details, and content of meetings throughout the duration of the partnership. The system also enables ‘syncing’ of hours committed to mentoring or being mentored to members’ CPD records, with only essential information transferred, and all confidential information held solely on the mentoring part of the system. This allows mentors and mentees to retain total privacy over the content of discussions had, and to track the hours of CPD gained from a productive and longer- term developmental learning activity like mentoring.
In addition to the dedicated training and
recording platform available, mentoring and being mentored through IHEEM allows for bespoke connections to be established between mentor and mentee, an extended network of industry professionals, and Institute support of relationships. The Authorising Engineer process is one which rightly requires significant commitment, understanding of requirements, and a high level of knowledge and skill within each given discipline. In

offering members the opportunity to be mentored through this process, the Institute aims to facilitate peer support and enhance professional development opportunities for individuals considering this accreditation as a next step in their career. At the IHEEM Authorising Engineers
Conference 2024 in Epsom last month, IHEEM member, Matthew Gilmore (pictured, above left, co-presenting with Mark Richards) described his current role and motivations for seeking mentor support, how he has found the mentoring process with IHEEM, and the impact that pairing with his mentor, Mark Richards, AE (E) has had on his understanding of, and interest in, embarking on the AE process.

Authorising Engineers “I work in the private sector, and provide electrical compliance services to many NHS
and private healthcare installations. Being an active member of IHEEM, I participate in as many events and webinars as possible. The option to have an IHEEM mentor was a very welcome addition to my membership. The Institute has a wealth of experienced engineers with a variety of skillsets. I am interested in becoming an Authorising Engineer Electrical AE (E), so that as my career advances, I can serve my clients with a better understanding of the HTMs, and help solve non-compliances and address recommendations from audits. “As part of the IHEEM mentoring scheme,
I have been paired with Mark Richards, who has a very impressive career history, and has supported me from the ‘get-go’ as my mentor. This has enabled me to gain a very in-depth understanding of the role of an AE. I have attended site visits, have been set research projects around the role and regulation requirements of an AE, and had access to advice and technical support by phone and email. The experience has been very positive, and added real value to my CPD as I progress with my career. The online MyIHEEM platform is very simple to use, and allows me to record any activities completed.”
