TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT Updates
National Healthcare Estates and Facilities Day This year, the National Healthcare Estates and Facilities Day, taking place on Wednesday 17 June, provides an important national opportunity to recognise the indispensable contribution of Estates and Facilities (E&F) professionals to the delivery of healthcare services across the United Kingdom. Established to highlight the breadth and significance of these roles, the day offers a collective moment to acknowledge the individuals and teams who ensure healthcare environments remain safe, compliant, and operational. Estates and Facilities services represent a significant and highly diverse proportion of the healthcare workforce. Spanning cleaning, portering, catering, security, maintenance, engineering, reception services, and project management, these professions underpin the infrastructure upon which clinical care depends. Through their professional expertise and day-to-day dedication, E&F teams sustain environments that directly support patient safety, service resilience, and organisational performance.
The 2026 celebration marks the fifth anniversary of the
initiative, reflecting its growing recognition and engagement across the sector. In 2025, the campaign achieved 599 registrations from healthcare organisations, commercial partners, and social care teams seeking to participate. This collective engagement reached a remarkable 251,000 staff across the four nations of the UK, demonstrating the scale and national impact of the initiative. In recent years, health service providers throughout the country have engaged in formal appreciation events, internal awards programmes, staff communications, and public campaigns to acknowledge their E&F teams, further elevating the profile of these essential professions. In addition to recognising current staff, the day also
promotes awareness of the diverse career pathways available within Estates and Facilities. The sector encompasses a broad range of essential non-clinical careers that support the safe and effective delivery of healthcare services. By increasing visibility, the initiative contributes to workforce development and encourages future talent into these critical roles. Organisations are invited to participate through local
recognition activities and by accessing the complimentary supporter’s kit available via the official National Healthcare Estates and Facilities Day website. Further information and participation resources can be found at: https://www.
