TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT Spotlight SPOTLIGHT ON

PETER DAVIES Dip RSA, MIHEEM, MIPEM, RCT

P

eter Davies is a decontamination engineer at NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership – Specialist Estates Services (NWSSP-SES). As part of a small specialist team, Peter supports

the AE(D) in providing advice and guidance to Welsh Health Boards and Trusts, and carries out auditing of decontamination facilities. He also undertakes annual validation of decontamination equipment across NHS Wales. As decontamination lead for pharmaceutical sterilisation, he provides advice, guidance and training to pharmaceutical sterilization units. “One of the most rewarding aspects of the role is the ability to improve standards across NHS Wales,” says Peter. His interest in engineering began at an early age where, at the end of the school day, he enjoyed spending time at his

father’s garage, serving petrol to customers, and helping out in the workshop. Peter has very fond memories of helping his dad when repairing customers’ vehicles. This early foundation led him, at the age of 16, to undertake a four-year Mechanical Engineering apprenticeship at the

Royal Aircraft Establishment Ministry of Defence (RAE MoD), Aberporth. “The training I received taught me the discipline and values I have used throughout my career,” he says. Following his apprenticeship, Peter worked as a mechanical engineer for the MoD for 16 years. Committed to professional standards and leadership, he became engineering manager, providing hands- on leadership of teams involved in targetry, instrumentation, and optical missile tracking systems. Work involved supporting trials for guided weapons systems at RAE Aberporth and various other MoD military research facilities across the UK. Working closely alongside the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force, Peter found this work extremely interesting and rewarding. Acquiring skills as new and exciting technologies were being developed, and with underpinning values and multi-disciplinary team working, this guided him well throughout his professional career. In 2003, Peter left the MoD to follow an interest in healthcare engineering, working

as a hospital engineer and estates manager at a private hospital. Peter enjoyed the challenges of this role, which sparked an interest in clinical engineering. When a vacancy arose in the Clinical Engineering Department at Hywel Dda University Health Board, Peter jumped at the challenge and spent ten happy years as part of the Clinical Engineering team at Withybush Hospital. In 2016, he left the Health Board to seek further challenges and took up his current position at NWSSP-SES. Peter’s involvement with IHEEM goes back over 20 years and he currently serves as Trustee and Council Member and is also

Honorary Secretary of IHEEM Wales Regional Branch. “I have great pleasure in being able put something back into an Institute that has served me so well over the years,” he explains. In his spare time, Peter is an outdoors enthusiast and has a passion for scuba diving. A member of the British Sub Aqua Club

(BSAC), Peter is a long-standing diving instructor and training officer, and has spent many years training people of all ages to become qualified scuba divers. “Guiding trainees to develop the competence and confidence they require as they progress through their diving qualifications, and watching their passion for the sport grow, is a particularly rewarding experience,” he says.
