A change of sector for IHEEM membership team new recruit
Hannah Davies has joined the IHEEM Head Office team as the Institute’s new Membership Support Officer, to assist Membership Development Officer, Karen Casey, and Membership & Administration Coordinator, Clair Wilkins, with all aspects of membership applications and registration. Twenty-one-year-old Hannah grew up in Gosport, and on leaving school, studied for and gained a BTEC in Travel and Tourism at Highbury College in Cosham. She had always enjoyed travel, and at one stage wanted to be an air hostess. She explained: “I also wanted to start earning when I left school, and got a job at a local Marston’s pub, starting as a waitress, and working my way up to Restaurant Supervisor. I enjoyed the fast pace in the hospitality trade, the adrenalin rush, the customer interaction, and being part of a team. At times the work was intense, but the teamwork was great, and the experience invaluable.” Feeling an affinity for hospitality work, Hannah went on to study for, and gain, a BTEC Level 3 as a Food and Beverage Supervisor in Hospitality Management while working at Marston’s, having also obtained A-Levels in Law, Business, and Criminology there. She said: “I enjoyed all three A-levels, but knew that if I was to stay in the hospitality business I’d want to move from ‘front of house’ to a back office supervisory or management role. I felt my A-Level in Business would stand me in good stead.” After three and a half years with
Marston’s, and wanting a change, in April 2023 Hannah took a job as a waitress at burger restaurant, Hub Box, in Portsmouth – where she worked until joining IHEEM this February. She said: “By early this year I felt I needed a complete

change of role and sector. With my strong administration, sales, support, and ‘people skills’, the Membership Support Officer role – where I knew I’d have lots of contact with IHEEM’s members and external organisations – really appealed. “In the first week here, Tania, Karen, and other Head Office team members, have given me a whistle-stop tour of healthcare engineering and estate management, the Institute’s work, and some of the interesting work members do in hospitals and other healthcare facilities. I have also got stuck into dealing with membership applications. I knew very little about IHEEM before I joined, but am finding the work interesting, and look forward to getting to know more members as time goes on.” In her spare time Hannah particularly
enjoys travel. She said: “One of the highlights of my trips overseas has been my recent visits to Romania, where my partner, Lary, is from. It’s a fascinating country, with ‘traditional’ working practices – such as in farming – still very evident in rural areas. Visting the capital, Bucharest, was such a contrast; it’s not only a beautiful city, with fantastic buildings, but also has a modern and international feel, and feels a world away from what you see and experience in less developed rural areas.”

‘Our Vision, Your Future’ – IHEEM publishes 2024 Business Priorities
IHEEM has recently published its 2024 Business Priorities.
The Institute’s CEO, Pete Sellars, said: “We are delighted to share our 2024 plan with our members as part of our ongoing commitment to transparency and providing updates on key information. This plan is part of our yearly suite of documents, which includes our Annual Report, that keep members informed of our plans, activities, and achievements. The deliverables set out in this document have been ratified by IHEEM Council, and
underpin our primary purpose, which is to improve and develop the Institute and support both our individual and affiliate members. All of these priorities align to the core objectives set out in our 5 Year Business Plan, and as usual I would welcome any feedback.” The full document can be viewed and downloaded from the IHEEM website, at
