The Institute has always been very much about the people and looking after its members in a kind and considerate way, and this also comes out in how we support and guide members to be all they can be. This underpins our vision and my involvement with my fellow Membership Committee colleagues, as together we all consider every application with care to ensure the right

outcome for the candidates at that point in their career, and advise on the next steps should they wish to take them. For me the benefit of giving back and seeing people flourish, as well as being there for other females in our institute as a role model, makes me proud. I also love to read about the projects and challenges overcome in technical and practice reports for those wanting to achieve Engineering Council status, and I love using all my skills gained over many years in different areas of the industry to ensure that the review is fully appraised and given due consideration, as the candidates have taken a lot of time to develop their application. I am routing for success for each and every candidate, and hence feedback needs to be constructive and supportive to help them reach their goals. A real pleasure is seeing the strength in a number of our female members coming though; there are some truly clever ladies in our institute, and I recently meet another lady member I had reviewed at IHEEM. We have since worked together on the advice for the NHS on the Building Safety Act, and we are bringing our skills to make a difference.

As a Chartered Building Services Engineer, I often look back at my career and reflect on the responsibilities and challenges encountered, but more importantly the people I have met, who guided, influenced, and mentored me to be the person I am today.

My career started within the Royal Navy as a Marine Engineering Artificer. After

completing a four-year apprenticeship I spent a further six years serving on nuclear submarines. I completed a BEng (Hons) in Building Services Engineering at The University of Central Lancashire in 2006, and became a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institute in early 2022. I’m currently employed in a busy, challenging, and dynamic environment as Head of Estates at the Countess of Chester Hospital. Throughout my career I’ve always tried to grow, both in a

professional and a personal manner, and have always thrived in passing on knowledge and experience. Seeing the development of
