TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT Supporting the Institute

For those of you contemplating joining our institute, or indeed seeking professional registration, I would highly recommend the effort

Tony Chare

many apprentices and engineers throughout my career has been exceptional. For those of you contemplating joining our institute, or indeed seeking professional registration, whether it be at Engineering Technician, Incorporated Engineer, or Chartered Engineer level, I would highly recommend the effort. The Membership and Professional Development team at IHEEM is amazing; my journey and experience of the process from start to finish was seamless.

Inspired to support IHEEM The engagement with my Chartered Engineer

sponsor, IHEEM’s development team, and the professional interview panel, inspired me to such a degree that I felt compelled to support and give back to the Institute. So, what did I do? In August 2023 I completed the membership application review training. This programme was delivered remotely, and walked us through the application process with clear, well-written guides. To complement this, IHEEM has produced an excellent flow chart, which ensures alignment to process and procedure. Following completion of the course and a series of test applications, I have since successfully reviewed numerous membership applications. The age, experience, and job role of applicants has been widespread, making the process interesting. I have reviewed candidates working within the NHS, within MEP consultancies, and from a service- provider background. This process has been relatively straightforward, assisted by clear training and resource guides.

The next stage will be Professional Registration interviewer and assessor training, taking the form of a one-day day face-to-face scenario-based course at a venue and date to be confirmed. This will then allow me to sit on the interview board for potential Incorporated and Chartered Engineers wishing to register via IHEEM with the Engineering Council.

The addition of the IHEEM Membership

and Professional Registration Committee has enhanced my continued professional development, opening further professional networks with the introduction of an enhanced knowledge pool to share best practice and discuss emerging technologies. Longer term, I have goals to join the

Ventilation Committee, and gain membership of The Specialised Ventilation for Healthcare Society. With further experience and professional development the aim is to become an IHEEM-registered Authorising Engineer (Ventilation). I would advise those considering becoming

involved further within the Institute, either via the Membership and Reviewer, Professional Registration, or any other committees, to make time and offer your services. Any involvement will most definitely benefit and support both yourself and the Institute, and greatly assist in the delivery of the many objectives IHEEM must meet.

BEng (Hons), IEng, ACIBSE, TMIET, LILEVE, FIHEEM, Technical Manager, Howorth Air Technology

I have been an engineer since I was 18, and since then it has always been clear that in any engineering industry,

competency, and your ability to execute duties to the best of your ability, have always been paramount. In healthcare engineering HTM 00 clearly states this fact, and from my point of view, what better way than following the Engineering Council and UK-SPEC around this topic. If you are professionally registered you have an element of your pre-checks done – you are able to work to the level at which you are accredited.

My reasoning for wanting to be part of the professional registration team at IHEEM is double-edged. I lead a team of enthusiastic engineers at Howorth, and the better I understand the processes and what is expected of them, the better I will be able to support and mentor them through the process with IHEEM. My second reason is that I believe people

in my position within our industry have a responsibility to help our unique workforce upskill. At the end of 2023 I was privileged to be awarded a fellowship with this Institute, and with that comes a responsibility to support and grow IHEEM, cementing its position for another 80 years!

IHEEM has a wealth of opportunities for members looking to engage with the Institute and support the delivery of its objectives. In addition to membership and registration responsibility, the Institute welcomes interest from members interested in contributing to Technical and Advisory Platforms, its Conference and Exhibition Committee, and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Working Group. Please see the IHEEM website or contact office@iheem.org.uk for further information.
