Benzene and sorting Piovan Group has developed the InspectaBe, an analyser designed to detect benzene in finished products such as sheets and bottles, or semi-finished products like granules or preforms, with various percentages of recycled PET. Benzene can be present in the finished product when residual traces of PVC remain in the PET after the post-consumer sorting process. InspectaBe allows measurements to be taken in 60 minutes at the production site and, together with Piovan’s Winfactory 4.0 management software, is highly valuable to the quality control system. This allows a history of the measurements associated with production lots to be archived as proof of the

safety of the process. Com- pared to traditional gas chromatography mass spec- trometry, the company says that InspectaBe is a simple, fast and highly automated process which


reduces variability due to operator interventions and increases the number of samples that can be analysed.
