CHEMICAL RECYCLING | PET

Eastman’s Polyester Renewal Technology is one

Loop and SKGC intend to form a joint venture with exclusivity to build recycled PET resin and polyes- ter fibre manufacturing facilities using Loop’s depolymerisation technology throughout Asia. SKGC currently has a 10% shareholding in Loop. In August, plans were announced for the first Asian Infinite Loop facility in Ulsan, South Korea, to begin preparation in 2022. Earlier, in September 2020, Loop announced a strategic partnership with waste management and recycling group Suez, with the objective to build the first Infinite Loop manu- facturing facility in Europe. & Communications, says: “The engineering of our Infinite Loop greenfield PET manufacturing facilities is progressing on schedule with our partners at Chemtex Global and Worley. We have adopted a ‘design one, build many’ engineering philosophy, which allows for the base engineering package of our technology to be replicated through all of our planned Infinite Loop facilities in North America, Europe and Asia. In terms of production capacity, our Infinite Loop facilities are designed for a 70,000 tonnes/yr capacity, which can be adjusted to meet local requirements and regulation.” Loop recently completed the conversion of its

Terrebonne, Québec pilot plant to a small produc- tion facility. Corrente says “significant equipment upgrades and investments have been made to the facility, which now enables us to produce commer- cial volumes of recycled PET”. Loop says it has secured offtake agreements with

large CPG brands for the supply of its 100% recycled PET. In September, together with French mineral water company Evian, Loop unveiled the Evian Loop bottle, made from Loop’s 100% recycled PET coming from waste plastic and fibre. The bottles will be rolled out at commercial scale in South Korea in 2022, with the goal of launching in other markets later.

of two recycling processes it has developed. “We pioneered the [PRT] technology decades ago when we were formerly part of Eastman Kodak and used methanolysis to recycle polyester including Kodak films,” says a representative. “We’ve retained that R&D knowledge and actually improved on it in the decades since. We are building the world’s largest polyester molecular recycling facility at our largest manufacturing site in Kingsport, TN, USA, and that facility will use methanolysis to recycle polyester. We expect it to be mechanically complete in late 2022.” The Eastman representative says the company’s goal is to recycle 250m pounds (around 113,000 tonnes) annually by 2025 and 500m pounds annually by 2050. “Our advanced recycling technologies have 20-50% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than traditional processes for producing plastics. Our technologies are commercial now. We have recycled millions of pounds of plastic and have partnered with some of the world’s leading brands to deliver Eastman Renew products with certified recycled content.” The representative says: “Chemical recycling is

new, so the infrastructure to provide feedstocks is still catching up with the technology. We need to build the infrastructure necessary to capture the complex, mixed streams of plastics so they can be chemically recycled. Chemical recycling is essential for a circular economy.”
