Eurostat shows 41% plastics packaging recycling rate in EU
A study by Eurostat, the EU’s statistical bureau, estimates that 41% of plastics packag- ing waste was recycled in the EU in 2019. Each person in the EU generated an average of 34.4 kg of plastics packaging waste, out of which 14.1 kg was recycled.
Between 2009 and 2019,
the recycling volume of this waste increased by 50% (equivalent to 4.7 kg). But the picture painted by the statistics is clouded by growth in the plastics packaging market. The volume of waste gen-

erated per inhabitant over the decade increased by 24% (6.7 kg). Eurostat said the amount of plastic packaging that was not recy- cled increased by 2.0 kg per
inhabitant from 2009 due to the greater increase in the absolute value of plastic packaging waste generated. Eurostat also carried out EU country analysis. Nine EU
Polystyvert/Coexpan PS recycling
Montreal-based Polystyvert and Coexpan, specialists in dissolution recycling technol- ogy and form-fill seal (FFS) food packaging systems respectively, are collaborat- ing to validate use of dissolution recycled polysty- rene (rPS) for FFS yoghurt packaging applications. To date, the two compa-
nies claim to have seen “very positive results.” Trials have shown that contami- nants were successfully removed from the initial feedstock, including pigments, dyes, paper, cardboard and other plastics, using Polystyvert’s purification technology. Recycled pellets were
produced and subsequently converted into yoghurt pots from feedstocks comprised of 100% post-industrial recy- cled (PIR) mono-layer and 50% PIR ABA multi-layer material. The next step will move the project focus on to PCR.

New WEEE recycler
in Spain Sostenplas is a new Spanish company that started recycling waste electrical and electronic waste in July. The company, which was set up by established plastics packaging recycler Fosimpe, is based in Segovia, near Madrid. It reprocesses mixed WEEE plastics to create three product streams: ABS, PS and mixed PE/PP. In future development
stages, Sostenplas is planning to install pelletis- ing lines for PS and ABS, and then move into compounding of these materials.
