Coperion develops single- step recompounding line


Coperion has introduced the ZSK FilCo filtration compounder for the recycling of post-consumer recyclate (PCR), or any highly contaminated polymer, which allows filtration and compounding in a single step. In conventional recycling


plants, PCR and contami- nated polymers must first be melted using a single or twin screw extruder, then filtered and then fed into a separate twin screw extrud- er where they are com- pounded with the aid of additives, reinforcing materials, and fillers. This conventional two-


stage process requires a lot of energy and the recyclate is subjected to high thermal stress. Coperion says the new


ZSK FilCo makes it possible to melt, filter, compound and pelletise recyclate in a single production system. Waste plastic is fed into the extruder in the form of regrind, fibre pellets, film flakes, or agglomerate, and is melted, homogenised, and devolatilised before being fed through an integrated filter that removes contami- nants and reintroduced into the same ZSK extruder for

New Fraunhofer IVV plant


The Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV has com- menced operation of a large scale solvent-based plastics recycling development plant, with the first undertak- ing being the production of


a plasticiser-free PVC recyclate within the EU Circular Flooring project. Fraunhofer IVV said the


ATEX compliant (explosion- proof) plant can run production campaigns ranging from 100 to 1,000


kg, with the materials extruded into recycled pellets with degassing extruders after undergoing a process including dissolv- ing, filtering, precipitation, drying and solvent recovery. � www.ivv.fraunhofer.de


Project recycles uncured composites scrap


A consortium of companies led by Ger- man plastics centre SKZ has begun a three-year project funded by the Bavarian Collaborative Research Program (BayVFP) to produce bicycle pedals from composite material scraps. Fibre-reinforced plastics, especially

carbon fabrics impregnated with epoxy resin, are often used in the aerospace, automotive, and sports industries, as they are characterised by good mechanical properties combined with low weight. However, up to 35% of uncured
