15 Chemical recycling: a simple explainer

Chemical recycling is a simple term encompassing a wide variety of technologies. Chris Smith discusses the key features

Welcome to Chemical Recycling Global Insight 2024, a special publication written and produced by AMI Magazines, with support from AMI Consulting. This is the third edition of the publication, which covers key areas of development in the chemical recycling industry around the world. In the previous publications, we looked at the market prospects for chemical recycling and how the industry is taking shape. There are still only a handful of operational sites chemically recycling plastics waste, but the industry’s challenges have become clearer in the past year. Issues around feedstock availability and sorting are covered here, along with the open question of how mass balance and allocation will be agreed. There is an article on the various technologies that come under the chemical recycling umbrella term, offering a guide to their differences and relative advantages. We have again produced an article that reviews some of the key news stories of the past year, providing a picture of the projects and collaborations around the world.
