At Fakuma, Roehm will showcase examples of


its materials that incorporate recyclate. One is its ProTerra series of PMMA materials. Its


ProTerra M5 range, for instance, is a moulding compound that uses mechanically recycled PMMA. It has recently been used to create a series of automotive components, including a luminaire – which will be seen at the show. “Our Plexiglas moulding compounds offer almost limitless design freedom for products in many areas of daily life, from lighting applications to surface enhancement for kitchen appliances,” said Siamak Djafarian, senior vice president of the moulding compounds business unit at Roehm.


AI improvement Schwarz Plastic Solutions, a plastics engineering consultancy, is a partner in a pan-European project that will help moulders to improve the quality of parts that are made from recycled material. The project, called Avidens, will used artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance in-mould monitoring – allowing real-time detection of anomalies and automatic in-line adjustment. Recent and forthcoming European legislation, such as for WEEE, is guiding the polymer industry towards greater use of recycled polymers, says the company. A key concern is maintaining consistent part quality during injection moulding of recycled content, due to fluctuations in material quality from batch to batch – or even cycle to cycle. While recyclers and machine makers are developing ways to ensure material quality – and adjust machine parameters accordingly – these technologies (such as pressure sensors) cannot ‘intervene’ once the material leaves the nozzle and enters the mould, says Schwarz. This in-line detection of anomalies inside the mould is the focus of Avidens. With new developed dielectric analysis (DEA) sensors, it looks at the behaviour of the polymer inside the cavity. The


complete picture and behaviour around viscosity and plasticisation are monitored and collected during every shot. Later, this data is processed with the help of AI and compared to pre-collected datasets. This will allow a direct, real-time, in-line feedback to the machine – to adjust parameters according to the observed anomalies. Sukano will make its debut at Fakuma 2024, showcasing a range of materials – including functional and colour masterbatches and compounds. In addtion, the company recently acquired Hungarian compounder Kays, which it says broadens its capabilities in technical com- pounding with recycled polymers – allowing it to expand its portfolio to compounds based on polymers including ABS, PC/ABS, PC and other engineering polymers.
