Barplast has provided its Aurum thermoplastic polyimide to Nasa as a potential way of insulating electrical engines. Researchers at NASA’s Glenn Research Center have tested thermoplastic polyimides for possible future aero-space transportation technologies. A NASA White Paper – presented at the SAMPE
conference in May 2024 – says there are “electrical wiring requirements for next-generation air and space transportation engineering designs with con- tinuous operation temperature requirements of up to 200°C”. The objective of the study was to assess the potential of thermoplastic polyimides for high- temperature electrical insulation. The paper highlights the need for insulation materials to “improve thermal management in high power density electric motors”. In addition, it says that a melt processable PI with high service temperatures is of interest as an electrical insulation candidate material. Additionally, melt processing enables easy dispersion of fillers within a polymer matrix which – imparting extra functionality such as thermal conductivity, it said. Aurum, a semi-crystalline TPI suitable for powder
coating, injection moulding, and extrusion coating, is produced by Mitsui Chemicals and sold by Barplast in the US. It claims to have one of the highest glass transition temperature (Tg) of 245°C (473°F) of any commercially available thermoplastic. �
