Recent innovations in thermoplastic elastomers include new medical
grades, a TPU for use in footwear applications and a material with superior flame retardancy
Soft touch: advances in thermoplastic elastomers
Thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) are found everywhere – from toothbrush handles to training shoes – and are widely used for their flexibility, durability and processability. Kraiburg TPE will focus on two new product
series at K 2025.
With its FC/CM3/AD1 series, it will concentrate on the consumer sector, especially food packaging. The compounds comply with European Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011 and Title 21, Part 170 to 178 of the Code of Federal Regulations (21 CFR) of the US FDA. They were developed for applications in contact
with fatty foods or cosmetics and have low migra- tion values between the packaging and the food transported in it. As well as being processable in multi-component moulding, the compounds offer properties such as a pleasant feel and high robustness, combining durability with high quality. The second product seen at K2025 is the FR3
series. These are TPEs whose flame retardancy has been improved. Based on successful tests, all

requirements of the European standard for railroad applications DIN EN 45545-2 R22 HL3 and R23 HL3 have been met.
As well as being suitable for fire protection, they have other properties that make them ideal for applications in this environment – including good PP adhesion and processing in standard injection moulding processes. At Chinaplas recently, the company introduced
its Thermolast R RC/AD/PA/AP series for the Asia-Pacific market. A high recycled content and optimised mechanical properties enable manufac- turers to develop products while meeting strict quality standards. “This is a TPE with both post-industrial (PIR) and post-consumer recycled (PCR) materials,” said Low Shwu Ping, assistant PD manager for industry at Kraiburg TPE. The series features a hardness range of 40-90
Shore A, as well as an optimal balance of flexibility and durability. It bonds well with polyamide (PA)
