Wrapped up: latest in packaging technology
Packaging developments at this year’s K show include several new all-electric machines, as well as a scheme to produce and recycle foamed drinking cups
It’s no surprise that this year’s K show in Germany will showcase many packaging technologies – but restaurants and bars at the fairground will also be offering reusable cups made from Borealis foamed polypropylene. The initiative will serve as a pilot for assessing
the effectiveness of scalable reuse systems at large events. Messe Düsseldorf will analyse usage patterns – tracking how many cups are used, re-used, and recycled. The insights will contribute to the development of more sustainable solutions for future events. During K, Messe Düsseldorf will install special collection containers. Visitors can return the cups to service points, place them in special collection containers or take them home for personal use. “Introducing reusable cups to replace single-use
cups at K2025 supports our sustainability goals,” according to Thomas Franken, K director at Messe Düsseldorf. The foamed PP for the cups is produced using

chemically recycled feedstock using OMV’s ReOil technology.
Maximilian Grasserbauer, senior vice president for the circular economy at OMV, said: “ReOil is our chemical recycling technology that converts end-of-life plastics into circular feedstock.” Other partners in the development of the cup
are: injection moulding machine maker Arburg; Bockatech, whose EcoCore foaming technology was used to make the injection moulded cups – cutting plastics use by up to 50%; MCC Global IML, which makes in-mould labels for rigid plastic packaging; and Miko Pac (part of Paccor), which develops and produces plastic packaging.
Lighter preform German packaging specialist KHS says it has created one of the lightest PET bottles – thanks in part to preform technology from Husky of Canada. Under the working title of Factor 101, it has
produced a container that uses 5.89g of material to September 2025 | INJECTION WORLD 13
