Melt control: advances in hot runners
Recent developments in hot runners include new nozzles, control and monitoring technologies and a new system for PET preforms with a reduced stack height
At a time when the control of process waste is increasingly important, hot runners help to ensure that injection moulding scrap – in the form of sprues – is minimised. In addition, several new systems claim efficiency and control benefits. Mold Masters showcased a range of new hot runner systems at Fakuma – including its Fusion Series G3 and the EcoOne-Series. The Fusion Series G3 hot runner system comes
pre-assembled, with new features that optimise mould design, simplify installation, cut downtime, and raise performance. These include: system installation at room temperature; reduced nozzle bore cut-outs; compound nozzles; a heated nozzle flange; compact quick release actuators; and waterless actuators featuring passive actuator cooling technology. The system on display featured its Servo Electric
Valve Gate (SeVG+) system which provides superior process control for demanding applica- tions. SeVG+ is a servo-driven actuation system that controls individual valve pin opening and closing profiles. The SeVG+ servo motor offers a compact 114mm height that minimises stack height and simplifies mould designs. The EcoOne-Series 1-16 drop hot runner system is an economical, standardised solution for processing commodity resins in simple, cost-sensi- tive applications such as consumer goods, small home appliances, basic automotive components and electronic peripherals and accessories. comes with a range of standard components including manifolds with custom pitch ranges. Recent updates include: the availability of hot half plates; a one-drop inline manifold option; a 16-drop manifold option; expanding the maximum dimensions of the manifold blocks to 600mm x 600mm; and expanding the range of electrical con- nector options. In addition, it showed its new TempMaster M4 hot runner temperature controller. It uses Mold- Masters’ new HR-Connect technology, which replaces conventional mould thermocouple and power cables with a single cable between the mould and control head unit.
Reduced stack height
Mold-Masters has also optimised the design of its PET-Series hot runner system – reducing its stack height to 260mm on systems with 72 cavities or less using standard components. Traditionally, more compact stack heights
required a two-platen design. The PET-Series, however, maintains its three-platen design to preserve all the advantages of that configuration. The three-platen design, specifically for PET applications, helps improve geometric thermal balancing and reduce plate bowing to enhance preform quality, says the company. By offering a more compact stack height, moulders can run the system on a wider range of machines – including those from older generations
