TriMas to acquire Affaba & Ferrari in Italy
US-based TriMas has agreed to acquire Affaba & Ferrari, an Italian injection moulder of precision caps and closures for food and beverage, agrochemical and industrial product applications. Terms were not disclosed. The deal is TriMas’s fourth acquisition in the rigid packaging field since early 2019, including Taplast, another Italy-based maker of dispensers, closures and containers. The Affaba & Ferrari deal should close before the end of the year. Affaba & Ferrari will then become part of the company’s Packaging segment, within the Rieke division. Current managers Guglielmo and Silvia Ferrari will remain with the company. TriMas CEO Thomas Ama- to said the combination will

supplement its product offerings, not least via Affaba & Ferrari’s production capabilities for aseptic applications and its many food packaging safety certifications. The acquisition also brings TriMas major customers and an advanced manufacturing operation in Europe. Hitherto family-owned
and based at Borgo San Giovanni, near Milan, Affaba & Ferrari is expected to have about €32m in sales in the current fiscal year. Its range includes aseptic caps for juices, dairy products and other drinks, plus tamper evident, childproof, induc- tion, flex spout and other caps and closures.

also used BASF’s Ultrasim simulation tool to develop the mould for the part. The material was chosen because components made from it largely retain both transparency and high mechanical strength after repeated exposure to superheated steam, De’Longhi said. Tests showed that Ultrason E 3010 MR maintains excel- lent mechanical properties after 2,000 cycles of repeated steam sterilisation at 134°C.

Hot runner manufacturer HRSflow said that the expansion of its site in San Polo, Italy, is almost complete. The new site, which was designed in partnership with Festo Consulting, covers an area of about 3,000m2 and will increase the firm’s production capacity and flexibility within the European market. The workspace is designed according to lean manufacturing criteria and completes a project that HRSflow began in 2017 to redesign the assembly process for hot runners. COO Umberto Santin said that this has led to “a significant increase in quality and performance key measurables, while the productivity ex- pressed in man-hours has improved from 20% to 50% in different areas”. The working environ- ment is shaped to reduce every possible means of slowing down production flow in terms of people and goods. Key features include a high level of automation and data exchange, as well as new QA and digital develop- ment systems. Sustain- ability is also factored in, with solar panels in the roof supplying all of the facility’s energy needs. n Turn to page 45 for the latest news and develop- ments in hot runners.
