Finnish packaging giant Huhtamaki grew both sales and profits in the first half of this year. Sales rose 31% to nearly €2.2 billion (US$2.2bn) for the period. At the same time, profitability (adjusted EBIT) rose 28% to around €200m (US$200m). Flexible packaging saw a 43% rise in sales to more than €768m (US$768m). Sales in North America rose by 29% to €712m (US$712m), while its food service business in Europe,
Asia and Oceania (EAO) saw a 23% rise in sales to €543m (US$543m) for the period. However, in terms of
profit (adjusted EBIT), each business unit shrank: food service EAO fell by nearly 6%, flexible packaging by nearly 3% while profits in North America were down by 0.6% for the period. “We continued delivering
a strong performance in the second quarter of 2022, despite volatile market conditions,” said Charles Héaulmé, president and
CEO of Huhtamaki. “We faced strong headwinds created by supply chain constraints, challenges with raw material availability and geopolitical turmoil.” In April, the company began a process to divest its operations in Russia. Huhtamaki’s outlook for 2022 is unchanged, said Héaulmé: “While uncertainty remains high in the global economy, we continue to execute on our long-term growth strategy,” he said.
