Addex introduced a single-inlet plenum as a retrofit to existing blown film lines at NPE. Historically, single-inlet plenums have featured only one blower hose, which facilitates an easier installation and creates space around the die. However, they have the reputation of being unable to deliver an even gauge profile. As a result, multi-inlet air rings have typically outperformed single-inlet plenums because they divide air flow into multiple, closely spaced inlets with corre- sponding improvements in gauge control. In response, Addex has designed a single-inlet plenum with the performance of a multi-inlet plenum. The aerodynamic design employs dual counterflow channels which direct air flow in two opposing directions inside the plenum. These two counterflows of air join inwardly together to create a combined uniform flow of air to the lip set. The measured overall profile performance is better than with a conventional multi-inlet air ring and inlet effects aren’t seen in the film which is a major step forward in single-inlet plenum design. Another advantage of a single-inlet plenum is a
reduction in hoses – from as many as eight, down to a single hose. This saves space on the plant floor, giving easier access around the die for mainte- nance and operation. �

Clariant has introduced its AddWorks PPA, a series of PFAS-free processing aids for polyolefin film extrusion. The range features smooth and stable process-
ability, while ensuring high optical film qualities by eliminating sharkskin and dye build-up effects. A film’s tensile, mechanical and sealing properties are unaffected by the new compositions and the solutions exhibit high thermal stability and low or no migration, as well as low let down ratios (LDRs) ensuring competitive cost-in-use. “Our teams have developed these solutions to

be fully compliant with tightening PFAS regula- tions, while combining high production line efficiency and film qualities,” said Miao Zhigang, head of Clariant’s polymer solutions business. It has developed AddWorks PPA in response to
increased concerns about PFAS in the environment and the implications for human health. The new products contain no inorganic content or silicone components. �

Extreme Coatings says there is high demand for its wear-resistant coatings as processors look to improve efficiencies and boost uptime. ‘‘Demand for our wear-resistant coatings has continued to rise in several key applications,” said Scott Caplan, executive vice president of Extreme Coatings. “Processors have realised that they can’t afford downtime so are looking to our coating solutions to mitigate wear.” Its CarbideX Proline is used for high-perfor- mance feedscrew applications. The process encapsulates complex processing components with hard, dense tungsten carbide formulations. These components include plastic injection moulding screws. Close tolerance machinery is most efficient when OEM tolerances are new, so maintaining the screw to barrel tolerance is vital to an efficient production operation, says the company. Its thermal spray technology applies wear- and
corrosion-resistant CarbideX coatings – made of tungsten or chromium carbide – to almost any new or repaired feedscrew. This can extend screw life by three to five times. Other benefits include in- creased production, less maintenance, improved barrel life and reduced downtime. �
