The NPE show finally returned to Florida this month, after a six-year gap. Here, we review more innovations seen at the event, encompassing materials, machinery and ancillaries
Show and tell: plastics innovations at NPE 2024
After a six-year wait, NPE – the huge US-based plastics show – finally returned to the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. The Plastics Industry Association, which organises the event, hosted around 2,100 exhibitors across 1.1 million net square feet of exhibit space. The show was held on 6-10 May – and boasted around 50,000 registrations before the show opened. “We’re thrilled to welcome the most global audience since NPE 2015 – with innovators, experts and visionaries registered from 128 unique countries who are ready to shape the future of plastics,” said Matt Seaholm, president and CEO of the association. As well as the exhibits – in materials, machinery and ancillaries – there was a full schedule of educational sessions. One highlights was a feature on Open Platform Communications United

Architecture (OPC UA) – which was demonstrated live on the show floor. OPC UA can help to ensure that machines, devices and applications communi- cate seamlessly. This can help to cut costs, improve efficiency and raise performance. Though mainly adopted by injection moulding machine makers, ancillary manufacturers have also grasped its importance. “When OPC UA came along, we implemented it
straight away,” said Alan Landers, product manager for blending at Conair. “We now offer the OPC UA server in all of our products.” The next NPE is scheduled to take place, at the same venue, on 3-7 May 2027. Film & Sheet Extrusion previewed many NPE
