Handle with care: materials handling
Advances in materials handling include a new AI-driven conveying technology, hopper loaders for medical and pharmaceutical applications and a quick-change screw feeder
The range of materials handling equipment encompasses a range of equipment that must, in various ways, dry, mix and convey a variety of raw materials. Coperion and Schenck FPM – which are in the
process of merging – showcased their materials handling solutions at NPE recently. Coperion has expanded its ProRate Plus feeder line with a Plus-MT twin screw version that is ideal for feeding additive powders in the plastics industry. The gravimetric feeder with horizontal agitator ensures that the two screws are always optimally filled with material. The technology also has the advantage of reducing pulsations and the screws have a self-cleaning effect. Twin screw feeders are ideal for difficult to handle powder additives such as talc, calcium carbonate or carbon black. The Schenck MechaTron dry material feeder has all the design features that manufacturers need for processing. Complete disassembly from the non-process side of the feeder eliminates the need to remove upper extension hoppers, bins, bulk bags, and IBCs to clean or maintain the feeder. Flexible or all stainless-steel hoppers are available to accommodate any unique dry material feeding application. MechaTron feeders are perfectly suited to handle a wide range of volumetric or gravimetric feeding applications for bulk solid materials. In addition, the Coperion K-Tron T35 Quick

Change screw feeder – such as the K2-ML-T35-QC model on display – shows the ease of interchange- able feeding tools and the simplicity of disassem- bly. The T35 is designed for free flowing to very poor flowing powders (e.g., lumpy, moist or bridge building materials) as well as fibres, flakes and other bulk materials. Also, the low-rate vacuum (LRV) receiver is an
NFPA-compliant, vacuum conveying system – with 50-litre capacity – that offers a cleaner operating environment for handling raw materials and finished products. It is easily integrated into a range of production processes, including extruder lines and film producing processes. It can also handle minor additives for mixing and PVC blending towers. A number of other suppliers also showcased materials handling products at the NPE show.
Ancillary launches AEC introduced several new ancillary products at NPE. First, it has re-designed its line of GPL packaged
chillers, which are now available with two refriger- ant choices: R-410A or R-454B. R-454B is a ‘low GWP’ refrigerant that meets new environmental requirements. It has a controller with a new colour touch screen for simple operator use. The new design allows easier access to components for regular maintenance.
