Demand for high barrier food packaging films looks set for robust growth, according to Applied Market Information. Global demand for food packaging films reached nearly 17 million


tonnes in 2015, of which 1.4m tonnes incorporated a high barrier – de- fined as a film with an oxygen permeability of less than 10cc. Although high barrier films represent only 8% of the total flexible food packaging market, the share in value terms is much higher, says AMI in the report, High Barrier Flexible Films for Food Packaging. Meat and fish packaging accounts for almost one-third of demand, and is the largest end use application, while other end use applications each account for around 10% each. On a regional basis, these figures differ dramatically – emphasising the social and economic tendencies of individual regions.

medium-to-high density metallocene PE – played a key role in providing the best product for each part of the 11-layer barrier film – with properties including water vapour barrier, superior optics and fast sealing.


Growth barrier Nippon Gohsei has reported two ongoing developments in using its high barrier Soarnol EVOH film in agricul- tural applications: a project to recycle PE/EVOH/PE film scraps into stretch wrap film; and a biodegradable and compostable high barrier fumigation film, which is still being developed.

The company says that its Duramet film has been used in three-layer structures (PET/Duramet/CPP), which achieve similar barrier results to traditional four layer structures (PET/foil/nylon/CPP). “It brings a lower cost, lower carbon footprint

round bale wrapping, soil fumigation and in bunker silos, thanks to its high barrier properties. It recently developed a seven-layer high barrier blown film that incorporates around 10% regrind – yet had a high enough gas barrier for these types of applications. The company has also developed a fully compostable high barrier fumigation film. The five-layer film is based on its Nichigo G-Polymer, and also incorporates Bionolle and tie layers. In tests, the film showed no emissions of fumigant – and no degradation – after 30 days. “We expect to see future application of this in


agricultural fields,” said Domenico De Angelis, associate marketing director and technical manager at Nippon Gohsei Europe.
