Making the most of materials handling


Before a polymer can be processed it needs to be meas- ured, treated, and conveyed to the extruder. This materials handling process plays an important role in boosting the quality of the final product. ProTec Polymer Processing says that its Somos


Batchmix XL batch dosing unit, for flowable multi-com- ponent mixtures takes the series to throughputs up to 1,900kg/h, while maintaining high dosing accuracy. The gravimetric dosing units can handle up to six


flowable components and be retrofitted with expansion modules. They can also be equipped with Somos vacuum conveyors for automatically filling material storage bins. In gravimetric batch dosing, the required mixture of


materials is obtained by weighing out the components in a single batch on the basis of the formulation. A num- ber of individual batches pass into a downstream mixer and, once homogenised, can be taken from the hopper as required. The Somos Batchmix series of gravimetric batch dosing units offers reproducible, high levels of metering accuracy, says the company, as both the weighing hopper and the downstream mixing hopper are equipped with two load cells. The optimised dosing devices can even handle regrind with a bulk density of as little as 400g/l, says ProTec. In addition, the company has introduced its RDT and


RDM resin dryers. The RDT-250 stationary resin dryer is for medium capacity material throughput, while the RDM-140/400 auxiliary dryer increases the maximum

material throughput capacity of the series. The RDT-250 stationary dry


air dryer can handle through- puts up to 200kg/h with an effective dry air throughput of 140 to 300m³/h. The dry air


generator and drying bin are also of a new design. The drying bins, which are square on the outside and cylindrical on the inside, can be fitted together to form a compact modular drying system comprising up to at most six bins in graduated sizes with effective volumes ranging from 50 to 300 litres. Meanwhile, the RDM-140/400 dryer completes the


company’s series of energy-efficient mobile dry air dryers. They are designed for drying medium capacity throughputs of flowable, hygroscopic polymer pellets and regrind. With an effective volume of 400 litres, the new dryer can achieve a throughput of up to 150kg/h depending on material – some 30% more than the previously largest RDM-100/300 auxiliary dryer with its volume of 300 litres.
