At Fakuma 2023, Dreyplas showed a number of alternatives to fluoropolymers. Its melt-processable UHMW-PE can be used for sheet, films, profiles and coatings in
applications where low friction and abrasion are critical. Dreyplas uses Mitsui Chemi- cals products, which are available as pellets, powders and micro powders. Highly abrasion-resistant sheets, profiles and hoses are some of the applications
of Lubmer pellets, a self-lubricating, high-impact grade of UHMW-PE. Mipelon, with its spherical, dispersible fine particles, can be produced with diameters of 10-30 microns – compared to the usual dimensions of UHMW-PE powder of 150-200 microns. It can be an alternative to PTFE in low wear, chemically resistant coatings. Another typical application is as a friction-reducing additive. “Numerous collaborative projects have demonstrated that, where elevated thermal stability is not essential, it is often possible to do without fluoropolymers,” said Norbert Hodrius, technical marketing director at Dreyplas. �

Boosting bio-based content
SI Group says that its Naugard Bio-XL ultra- accelerator helps boost sustainability in rubber goods including belts and hoses. The product is formu-
lated with over 85% bio-based content, is free from substances of very high concern (SVHC) under Reach and does not generate harmful nitrosa- mines as listed in TRGS552. It was designed to address the industry’s increased demand for materials that improve sustainability. Customers have used it as an alternative to DPG. “We are happy with the
industry’s response to Naugard Bio-XL,” said Robert Kaiser, VP of polymer solutions at SI Group. �

Kraiburg TPE has launched its Thermolast DW/H2 series of thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) for tubes and hoses. The compounds are suitable for shower tubes, pressure hoses and food hoses as well as for supply tubing in dishwashers and washing machines. The material can be used to make tubes and hoses with improved tensile strength, tear resistance, elongation at break and kink resist- ance, said the company. Thermolast DW/H2
replaces products in the previous DW/H series and is available in six hardness grades, from 70 Shore A to 40 Shore D. The compounds which are easily processable on conventional extrusion lines for polyolefins, are suitable for making cold- and warm-water tubes and hoses – providing up to 50% better mechanical proper- ties and good adhesion to polypropylene (PP). In addition, they also
provide the resistance to the growth of micro-organisms in accordance with EN
16421 (formerly DVGW W270) due to their extreme- ly smooth surfaces. They also have no impact on the odour, taste or clarity of water flowing through the tubes and hoses. “With this new series, we
are supporting customers who supply the market for sanitary and drinking water tubes and hoses in their effort to meet the stricter KTW-BWGL standard,” said Hartmut Arheidt, industry market manager at Kraiburg TPE. �
