EXTRUDER WEAR | MACHINERY

Developments in screw and barrel

protection include improved devices to inspect the state of extrusion machinery and an iron-based alloy that offers superior wear performance

Internal affairs: latest in extruder wear protection

The surfaces of the screw and barrel in an extruder must withstand all kinds of abrasion – so it is vital that any deterioration is measured and analysed – allowing fast remedical action to be taken. Extruder Experts has introduced a new barrel

measurement device to monitor extruder wear. At the recent Compounding World Expo in

Essen, Germany, general manager Dirk Zimmer- mann told delegates that the device uses laser scanning to detect both normal wear – such as abrasion and corrosion – and ‘abnormal’ wear including adhesion/friction. He said that the Promac EBM uses a rotating laser to detect ‘black holes’ – areas of wear – on the inside of an extruder barrel. It can measure inner bore diameters of 40-140mm – with one device able to handle the entire range. It has a customis- able measurement range of 100-450mm. The equipment – which fits into a portable carrying case – drags a small detector through the barrel. The device includes a high-definition (HD) camera, sensors and a WiFi data transmission

module. A PC is used to set parameters and analyse data. The system provides an analysis of the barrel’s inner surface and will highlight areas that are both within and outside wear specifica- tions. The device can be used to inspect both single- and twin-screw extrusion barrels. The company wants to develop the system

further, with elements including: n Software to compare current and historical wear measurements;

n 3D image of the full processing section with colour-coded wear areas; and,

n A direct link to the company – to initiate an order for a new barrel if needed.

Iron alloys Germany-based Reifenhäuser says that its R131 iron-based alloy can be an ideal material for adding wear protection to a cylinder. “Choosing the right wear protection for the cylinder of a plasticising unit is often a balancing act,” said Udo Nuber, area sales manager at its
