handles poor-flowing, sticky powders as well as fibres and pellets. The model is the first product developed jointly by the two companies together. It combines the mechanical design of one of Kubota’s gravimetric feeders with Brabender’s load cells and motors. The result is a feeder with a special negative angle wall hopper geometry and a diagonal agitator that prevents bridging and ensures optimal bulk material flow into the screw. In combination with other innovative components, mass flow is optimised and a uniform screw fill level is achieved, says the company. At the show, the company also exhibited

operators low-maintenance cleanability. Due to the integrated placement hole design, additional arms are attached, which means that the length of the paddles are shortened to offer improved mixing efficiency.

agitators are aimed at shear-sensitive materials and hard-to-mix substances of various densities.

Mixing showcase Zeppelin Systems showcased some of its mixing technologies at the recent Powtech exhibition in Germany, with its subsidiary Magdalena Kitzmann. The portfolio included mixers, silos and smart control concepts.

“Kitzmann stands for a high level of in-house

production depth, and Zeppelin Systems is also impressive on an industrial scale,” said Albrecht Gräfe, managing director of Kitzmann. This was highlighted by a current customer order: 10 silos with a total storage capacity of more than 4,000 tonnes and three heating-cooling mixer combinations with an hourly throughput of 17,000 kg of material (and an annual throughput of 134,000 tonnes) were delivered in a short time frame. There were updates on Zeppelin’s RS 7 rotary sieve machine (with applications in the plastics industry) and a screw conveyor from Kitzmann (with applications for powdered materials and granulates). Zeppelin says that all its intensive, container, and horizontal mixers – as well its as its heating/cooling mixer combinations – offer good product and result quality, high efficiency levels and modular adapt- ability.

Feeding time Also at Powtech, Kubota Brabender Technologie showcased its enhanced NX Series feeder. The feeder, in the medium feed capacity range,

Energy efficiency Ystral says it used Powtech to showcase a range of mixers that reduce energy demand through more effective process technology. “Compared to conventional solutions such as high-speed dissolvers or agitators, innovative mixing and dispersion technologies achieve significant improvements: depending on the application, the energy demand can be reduced by up to 90%,” said Hans-Joachim Jacob, senior expert process and applications at Ystral. For instance, it presented its Conti-TDS powder

wetting and dispersing machine in two sizes at the show. In the Conti-TDS, the processes of wetting and dispersing are concentrated in a dispersing zone with an effective volume of about a quarter of a litre. Compared to a dissolver operated in a vessel, the disperser generates about 30,000 times higher volume-specific power, which is crucial for successful dispersion, it said. Using a rotor-stator system, the disperser builds up shear forces that are 1000 times higher. The dwell time is very short, so that only a fraction of the energy is needed compared to the high speed dissolver.
