EXTRUDER OF THE MONTH

BT Industrial Head office:

Ownership: Profile:

Johannesburg, South Africa

Managing director: Kgomotso Lekola Founded:

2016 Private

BT Industrial’s business is centred around its expertise as a producer of HDPE piping systems. Its products are supplied to a diversity of businesses, including fresh water supply, gas and petrochemicals, ducting for optical fibre, irrigation, mining, telecommunications and agriculture. It also produces accessories, including fittings, flanges, Y-pieces and valves. As well as manufacturing the pipe, the company also performs installation and commissioning. BT Industrial also has a mining division.

Product lines:

The company’s range of pipes includes PE100 grades in diameters of 16-100mm, pressure classes of 4-25bar and a design stress up to 8MPa. These can variously be supplied in 100m coils (for 16-63mm pipe), 50m coils (for 75-110mm pipe) or 6-12m lengths, for pipe of 125-1000mm. It says that its HDPE water pipes are manufactured to SANS ISO 4427, while its HDPE gas pipe is made to SANS ISO 4437. Pipes are supplied plain ended, or joined with compression, electrofusion or butt-weld fittings. The company has switched completely to PE100 grades – and has discontinued the use of PE63 and PE80.

Factory location:

At its 2,000 sq m production facility on the outskirts of Johannesburg, BT Industrial processes around 1,500 tonnes of HDPE pipe every month, with a production rate of 800kg/hour. The company’s pipes are sold across Africa and it is in the process of getting a CE designation – which would allow it to start exporting to Europe. During the Covid-19 pandemic it has expanded into facemasks.
