MACHINERY | LABORATORY EXTRUDERS

R&D activity Davis-Standard has an active R&D laboratory at its US headquarters in Pawcatuck, where it tests new extrusion technology. The company says that its range of extruder models and sizes allows custom- ers to test concepts at a small scale before making a large investment in a full-sized machine. The company is engaged in a number of current

be varied along the length of the pipe, with high accuracy. The reason is that, in aeroplanes, pipes for water and air supply must be as thin as possible. When they are laid, the pipes are bent to shape – which could cause weak points if they are too thin. This is overcome by increasing wall thickness at specific points. For these products – depending on the material – line speed can reach 3m/min. Collin’s HP Extruder series is available in a number of variants. In the basic version, the E20P, E25P, E30P, E45P and E60P operate at up to 400°C – and as an option, to 500°C. Insulated machine covers protect the operator

from unintentional burns. Different drive concepts – such as AC induction motor or high torque motor – are available. For induction motors, the speed accuracy is +/-0.5%. For torque motors, it is +/- 0.25%. This ensures very low throughput variations, even in the lower speed range, says Collin.

research projects, including one to demonstrate its high-output groove feed extruders, using its 65mm DS-Helibar and 3.5in (90mm) Thermatic groove feed platforms. It is also testing the capability of its high-torque Thermatic 250 HSE (high-speed extrusion) series to achieve outputs of 2,500 to 3,000 lbs/hr. Other projects include: using direct-drive ¾in (19mm) and 1in (25mm) extrusion systems to demonstrate technology for high-tolerance medical applications in cleanroom environments; and applying instrumentation to several extruder models – ranging in size from ¾ (19mm) to 4.5in (114mm) – to prove the real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance capabilities of its DS Activ-Check. In addition, the company is demonstrating smart

extrusion technology on its 3.5in (90mm) elastomer extruder with servo re-feed roll control. A key feature of this platform is the Model 4000AG extrusion crosshead, which has automatic concen- tricity and wall thickness control using X-ray measurement technology.
