Garden hose made from PVC reclaimed by VinyLoop process


While the top-line figure for PVC recycling grows every year, it is because of the exist- ence of a number of recognised schemes – and the efforts of individual companies. A new three-layer


garden hose from Fitt of Italy claims to have a low environmental footprint – because it is made largely from recycled PVC. The inner layer of the hose is made from recycled material collected from customers and processed by VinyLoop. This accounts for up to 95% of the hose. The middle layer (made from polyester thread) maintains pressure resistance and the outer layer is made from virgin PVC with high resistance to chemicals

Compounding plant expansion adds capacity for catheter production


Clariant has carried out a significant expansion at its US compounding plant in Lewiston – increasing its capacity of fluoropolymers such as FEP, ETFE, and PVDF. The materials are


important in the production of medical catheters due to their flexibility, lubricity and chemical resistance. The company says that demand for these polymers and for specialised masterbatches – which Clariant markets for

medical applications under its Mevopur brand – is continuing to expand. A separate expansion at the plant, planned for completion by the end of the year, will add another compounding line allowing the company to produce larger batch sizes (3000-6000kg) of Mevopur pre-coloured medical plastic compounds. The company currently has lines that operate in batches up to 2500kg.

in Sweden and Singapore to produce materials for medical devices. All use the same validated raw-material ingredients and processes, so that the same products can be produced at any of the sites. It is now adding produc-

Low sag HDPE for large pipe


Sabic has unveiled a new portfolio of high-perfor- mance, low-sagging high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe grades, designed for the production of large diameter, thick-walled pipes that require high dimensional stability.


These types of pipe can


make the transport of large volumes of liquids – for industrial applications such as desalination plants and sea outfall lines – more efficient. The new grade, P6006LS,


is ideal for large-scale mining projects, particularly for slurry transportation, water transportation mains that involve challenging directional drilling installa- tion, desalination plant intakes and outfalls and other applications that call for large, thick-walled pipe that is traditionally made from steel and concrete, says Sabic.


The grade, which is


classified as PE112 certified by third party organisations, uses an advanced multi- reactor technology. It has a good low-sagging behavior, making it ideal for large diameter pipes – which need reliable wall thickness control. The grades can also help


to produce pipes using a more energy-efficient extrusion process, according to the company. ❙ www.sabic.com
