Graphene is seen by some as a key emerging
technology for conductivity modifi cation. Switzerland- based Color2Plast managing director Leonardus Jo Peeters will provide advice on selection and application of graphene for production of polymer masterbatches and compounds.
Electrically conductive plastics can provide essential protection of sensitive electronics from electrostatic discharge (ESD) and can also provide shielding from electromagnetic interference (EMI). Jukka Hilberg, CEO of Finnish company Ionphase, will explain how inherently dissipative polymers can be used in formulating effective ESD solutions. Neil Hardwick, Marketing Manager at US specialty compounds maker RTP Company, will explain how it is using a variety of fi llers and compounding methods to develop compounds offering EMI and thermal conductiv- ity. And Belgium-based Nanocyl’s Technical Services and Development Application Scientist Dr Marie Hurtgen will explore carbon nanotube-based thermoplastics developed for automotive and electronics applications.
Thermal management
More compact electronics and the development of new technologies such as LED lighting systems calls for electrically-isolating polymer materials with improved thermal management capabilities. The Enhancing Thermal Conductivity session will be opened by Germany-based Quarzwerke Head of R&D Dr Jörg Ulrich Zilles, who will talk through the use of new aluminosilicate fi llers in high thermal conductiv- ity electrically insulating thermoplastics. He will also show some real-world comparisons of polymer and metallic heat sink solutions.

Armin Kayser, Manager of Product and Applica- tion Development at Germany-based 3M Advanced Materials, will detail how high performance boron nitride fi llers are being used to create thermally conductive plastics for electrical and electronic applications. Dr Frans Mercx , who is Chief Scientist, T&I, Material Science – Functional Materials at Netherlands-based Sabic Innovative Plastics, will present the company’s fi ndings on the effect of in-plane and through-plane conductivity on perfor- mance of LED heat sinks. The fi rst day of the confer- ence will be brought to a close by Matthias Wuchter, Development Manager Compounds at Ensinger in Germany, who will present his perspective on the key opportunities, challenges and applications for thermally conductive plastics.

session focused on electrically conductive applications. Dr Larry Welsh, Materials Scientist at US-based Pentair Thermal Management, will explain the use of conduc- tive plastics technology in its Raychem line of self-regu- lating trace heating products. Dr Simon Leigh, Assistant Professor at the University of Warwick in the UK, will look at 3D printing of electrically conductive plastics and identify some of the key technical challenges. Dr Mario Gillmann, Reseach Associate at the Zentrum für Brennstoffzellentechnik (ZBT) in Ger- many, will discuss the development and processing of highly-fi lled conductive plastic compounds for fuel cell applications. Switzerland-based Cabot Corporation Marketing Manager EMEA Sebastian Heitkamp will close the session with an explanation of how high performance plastic concentrates can be used to enhance electrical conductivity. The remainder of the second day will focus on
thermally conductive applications. Germany-based Technoform Kunststoffprofi le R&D Engineer Sebastian Ossadnik will open the session by detailing the company’s development of a range of thermally conductive extruded profi les and highlighting potential market opportunities, such as heat exchanger components. Dr Klaus S Reinartz, Director Marketing LED EM/LA
at Bayer MaterialScience will discuss the use of thermally conductive polycarbonates in LED lighting applications. The conference will be brought to a close with a presentation by Luca Posca, Technical Service and Technical Marketing Coordinator at Italy-based Lati Industria Termoplastici, who will present some case studies highlighting the important practical tips covering selection, design and moulding of thermally conductive plastic compounds.
