performance for those looking to enhance the proper- ties of PLA through formulation and compounding,” Sawyer says. NatureWorks will focus its support on a select group of fi lament producers around the world. In parallel to launching the fi rst grade in its new Ingeo 3D series, NatureWorks has also been working on second generation 3D formulations. “Two of the concerns raised in the market with PLA in 3D printing applications are the inherent heat resistance and the toughness in fi nished parts when compared with ABS,” Sawyer notes. He says second-generation 3D materials will incorporate the functionality of newly commercial- ized polymer chemistries to address these concerns, while retaining all the properties that users currently appreciate. NatureWorks is beta testing these formulations in-house and in fi lament production with some of its fi lament partners. Teknor Apex is one of NatureWorks’ partners. At NPE in March, it said that new compounds in its Terraloy 3D-40040 high-impact, high-heat PLA range provide enhanced properties and tight tolerance control in 3D printing. Importantly, they allow oven drying of the

fi lament to prevent defects caused by residual moisture. The new compounds have improved heat defl ection temperature and impact strength compared with standard PLA and make possible tighter tolerance control after annealing. Teknor Apex says that the new compounds are based

on innovations that have overcome an inverse relation- ship in standard PLA between HDT and Izod impact strength. The new products exhibit up to two times the HDT and more than four times the impact strength of standard PLA resins. “Previous work to enhance PLA
