additives feature | Clarifiers and nucleators
Pallets (right) are a target application for Milliken’s new HPN210M nucleator, while its established HPN20E grade is now being used in IBM pharma bottles (below)
HPN 20E overrides the nucleation-effect of pigments to reduce variation and improve dimensional control independent of colour. Adeka’s NA-27 nucleator is finding use in filled and pigmented PP, particularly for interior and exterior automotive applications, where it improves mechanical properties. The organophos- phorus salt-based formula offers better dispersion than other Adeka grades, which helps the nucleating agent function more effectively, says Goman. While most nucleants produce the alpha-crystal phase of PP, a special class of nucleating agents forms the beta-crystal phase. Beta nucleating agents are different from other nucleators, and they find a fit in specialized, niche applications, notes Phil Jacoby, inventor of the technology and now a consult- ant at Jacoby Polymer Consulting. While most nucleators increase modulus,
beta nucleators slightly reduce modulus but significantly improve impact strength. If an extruded, beta-nucleated PP sheet is stretched in the solid state, such as on a BOPP film line, the beta crystals undergo self-cavitation, leading to the formation of micropores that are below a micron in size, notes Jacoby. The additive finds use in microporous, breathable films, such as: house wrap or in lithium ion batteries; in high-strength geotextile sheets; in thermo-
formed food packaging containers; and in pressurized PP pipes. Mayzo specializes in beta nucleant masterbatches, and NJC offers a pure beta nucleator.
