products have achieved a significant weight saving and cycle time reductions, helping them meet their sustainability targets. Used at typical addition rates of 0.25-2.00%, the MPM 2000 additive produces high levels of beta crystallinity. The company says this has allowed a number of its customers to achieve weight reduc- tions of at least 15% without sacrificing physical properties or rigidity in rigid thermoformed packaging applications. Productivity gains of up to 25% are claimed. Mayzo says that post-orientation of MPM 2000
nucleated extruded sheet at temperatures below the melting point of the beta crystal phase results in the formation of microvoids, which reduce density and increase opacity. This can make it possible to thermoform a white container without the use of TiO2
pigments.
The company says this characteristic enables customers to meet new European regulations on the use of the pigment, but also increases the value of PP waste — non-pigmented recycled PP typically has a higher market value. According to Mayzo, MPM 2000 can be used in
PP resins that are already alpha-nucleated with either sodium benzoate or talc. The company says that the additive may also work in the presence of other alpha nucleants, such as certain pigments. The masterbatch is colourless and is said to carry broad food contact approvals.
