In 1998, a New England plastics compounder was losing over fifty pounds of dry PVC resins a day. Their abrasive product, with various colorants and structural fillers, was pouring out of their ribbon blenders’ stuffing boxes. The PVC was constantly abrading the shafts inside the stuffing boxes, creating leak paths. Packing maintenance was expensive and a constant effort and the cost of lost product was gaining the attention of management. Doing nothing was not an option.
MECO presented a quotation in 1998, but the compounder felt the price was prohibitive and declined to purchase the seals. The plant instead purchased seals from a competitor at a lower price.
Four years later, MECO received a second request for quotation from the same plant. After three years of adequate performance, the competitor’s seals had begun to perform unpredictably, with frequent, sudden failures. The customer support from the competitor was less than satisfactory. This time, MECO won the quotation for bid.
Over the next three years, MECO seals were sold for all the machines in the compounding plant. Years of shaft wear from the stuffing
boxes had resulted in every shaft being undersized. Replacing the shafts was out of the budget for this plant, so
MECO engineers did what they have always done; they provided a custom solution.
After a site visit and documentation of the machines and wear, MECO engineers made sure each seal point was adjusted to account for the differences in shaft diameters on the worn shafts. MECO engineers were able to virtually eliminate the product losses the client was facing, and this plant is still using MECO seals to this day (20 years later). Since then, MECO seal products have also been installed at a sister compounding facility, highlighting the success of the customized seal process.
