PIGMENTS | SPECIAL EFFECT

also developed a new manufacturing technology that creates very small cavities between the pigment layers. This nanostructure, which it calls “spacer technology”, is said to provide an improved optical effect in pearlescent pigments used for coatings as well as plastics compounds and masterbatches. Eckart’s Edelstein Sapphire Blue is manufactured with this spacer technology, which results in a more intensive blue, says Wenzlik.
Combined gains German masterbatch maker Grafe has developed a masterbatch that combines additives that provide colour, gloss and shimmer effects, and scent. Three versions—Aromatic Pine, Lavender Field, and Floral Fragrance—developed for PP cosmetic bottles were presented at the Paris Packing of Perfume, Cosmet- ics and Design show earlier this year. In the Aromatic Pine version, the spicy aroma of pine is combined with a light, brown-reddish colour with what is described as hints of honey. “This very noble-looking effect colour tone is created by two complementary pigments and gives a luxurious shimmer,” says Lars Schulze, Head of Colour Development and Material Science at Grafe. In the Lavender Field formulation, the lavender
fragrance is combined with a rich violet effect pigment that appears as a transition of colours from red to dark purple. Meanwhile, the company says the Floral Fragrance version includes one effect pigment in a white cream colour to “radiate unobtrusive elegance and lightness.” Grafe says it worked together with Merck to develop the effect pigments and with Eschmann Textures, which offers individualised texture-gener-
ating technology for blow moulding tools. The masterbatch and texture can also be used in other moulding processes, including injection moulding. “The texture is created by a foil applied to the
tool. When selecting the colours, our colour designers made sure that the colours particularly enhance the effect because the effect pigments create a wide variety of reflections depending on the angle at which they are viewed,” says Schulze. “It is the combination of texture, effect and colour that creates a vivid surface.” Schulze says the scented colours represent a
three-year development programme at Grafe, which had to overcome several technical challeng- es. These included the temperature stability of the fragrance oil, which is designed to be used in a coextruded construction and to migrate to the surface of the container. “The fragrances last for about half a year, depending on the dosage, the
