TECHNOLOGY | ODOUR REDUCTION

Results of olfactory testing of HPF The Mineral Engineers’ Rescofil odour absorber product Source: HPF

oxidised carbon blacks). The additive is suitable for polyolefins, rubber compounds (eg, vulcanised TPE-V or EPDM) and recycled material. Evonik also supplies the additive in masterbatch form – TEGO Sorb PY 50 PE and TEGO Sorb PY 50 PP, which can be used in films made from recycled PE or PP. The latest from the Quarzwerke Division HPF

The Mineral Engineers is the Rescofil product range of mineral-based odour absorbers for recycled plastic compounds. In one test, Rescofil (5% by weight) was blended into a post-consumer polypropylene recyclate in a twin-screw extruder. Olfactometric testing according to the VDA 270 standard found that the Rescofil filler reduces the odour intensity of the recyclate significantly below the threshold value of 3, to a level that is no longer perceived as a nuisance (see chart). Wells Performance Materials – formerly Wells Plastics – formulates and compounds a range of additives for odour management in plastics. “Fragrances are usually the most cost-effective option but can only mask an odour [to] make the product smell of something else more pleasant,” says Julie Simmons, Regulatory Affairs Manager at Wells Performance Materials. “Fragrances are complex mixtures of organic molecules that have to have a degree of volatility to smell. This means that although they can be, and are, successfully compounded into polymers, there are temperature limitations, so not all polymers can be treated, together with life span considerations, as not all fragrances have the same degree of longevity.”
