ADDITIVES | FLAME RETARDANTS

Clariant also added two new HFFRs to its Exolit OP FR portfolio with grades designed for PBT in e-mobility applications. Exolit OP 1242 is designed for hydrolysis stability and Exolit OP 1266 is designed for stable comparative tracking index (CTI) of 600 V even after extended storage periods. Both meet the UL 94 vertical test with V-0 classifica- tion down to a sample thickness of 0.4 mm at dosing levels of 15-20%, the company reported. As the e-mobility industry moves to higher voltage systems of 800 V and above, materials with higher electrical insulation properties and long-term stability will be needed, the company said. Also new from Clariant is Exolit AP 422 A, a melamine-free, halogen-free ammonium polyphos- phate alternative to the company’s Exolit AP 422, which contains melamine. Melamine was classified as a substance of very high concern (SVHC) in the EU in 2023, and Clariant has been working on alternatives. The new product can be used in applications such as intumescent coatings and PIR insulation panels. In polyurethane foam applica- tions, it can replace TCPP (tris(chloropropyl) phosphate) and TEP (triethyl phosphate). Most recently, Clariant announced a joint venture

with Chinese chemical company Fuhua, focused on developing HFFR products. The initiative, which is subject to customary approval from relevant authorities, aims to create next-generation phos- phorus-based flame retardants for industries such as building and construction, automotive, and electric and electronic, the companies said.
