Elementis introduced Charguard 2010, an organoclay
that has an organically modified special lamellar silicate structure, for use as a flame retardant synergist in HFFR systems. The company said that the additive increases char formation efficiency, enhances the density and strength of the carbon layer, and inhibits dripping. The additive can be used to reduce ATH or MDH levels, which improves processing and mechanical properties. New from Kisuma is the Zenthos FR product family, designed for partial or full replacement of ATO in flexible PVC. “Driven by stricter fire safety regulations and difficult supply-chain sourcing and economics, the global market is noticeably shifting away from ATO-based systems. Zenthos FR responds directly to these industry challenges by providing superior economics, safety, and supply chain security,” said Zachary Hoffman, Business Development Lead at Kisuma Chemicals. Zenthos FR combines Kisuma’s new solutions for replac-
ing ATO in flexible PVC and PVC plastisols under one brand. The additive family offers alternatives to ATO, and also offers zinc-free options, as zinc borate is being re- viewed for environmental health and safety effects. “The additive helps compounders meet strict FR stand-
ards at cost-efficient dosage levels and provides multifunc- tional benefits, including char formation, smoke suppres- sion, thermal stabilisation and improved weatherability, all in a single FR additive. Target applications are coated fabrics, wires and cables, building envelopes, flooring, wall coverings, geomembranes and others where flame retar- dancy and sustainability have become increasingly critical,” said the company.
More alternatives A new polymeric brominated FR from Lanxess, Emerald Innovation 5000, is an alternative to DBDPE that solves the concern of migration of small molecular bromine-based flame retardant products, the company said. The new product demonstrates high permanence with low mobility when compounded into plastic resins, and it enables a broad processing window in engineering thermoplastics. Lanxess also introduced Levagard 2100, a reactive flame
retardant for rigid polyurethane (PUR) as well as polyisocya- nurate (PIR) foams and other foams used in construction and insulation. The low-viscosity reactive phosphonate chemically bonds into the polymer, resulting in low volatility, minimal migration, lower VOC emissions and enhanced durability, Lanxess reported. Early in 2025, Nofia Solutions acquired FRX Polymers and its Nofia brand polyphosphonate flame retardants from FRX Innovations. The Nofia family is a HFFR technology that does not contain PFAS, TPP, or melamine, providing an alternative to materials that face potential regulatory restrictions.
