The main production hall with bunkers for handling the pea

The manager of the facility in Rudnik, Mariusz Ilczuk (l), has been working in the company for over 20 years, with Ɓukasz Stepiuk.

Peat in the phase of production being mixed with other ingredients and reloaded a couple of times, the mixed material is left for 24 hours after which the lab check its pH and sodium level.

to the head loader operator. Stepiuk says “Technology relies on people. You can change technology but the right people are not easy to replace. To achieve the best results and avoid mistakes the person responsible for preparing the casing soil for clients must be trained for at least one year.” The finished product is loaded on their transport vehicles which have a design unique to the company. This includes special heaters installed in the trailer tarpaulin that prevent the casing soil from freezing when the temperature drops below minus 10 degrees Celsius. This and other types of innovation are possible thanks to their own workshops where technical solutions are designed and produced to enhance the traditional equipment of the company. The company owners are passionate about designing and implementing their own solutions at every stage of excavating and pro- cessing their products. It allows them to remain independent from external suppliers. They also engage on a daily basis in some of the operatio- nal aspects of the company.

24 MUSHROOM BUSINESS

The environment The company sees its strength as its own peat bogs with both lowland and upland peat as well as its own, fully independent production facilities. Access to own resources enables the company to produce all types of casing soil to provide their clients with a very fine-tuned product profile. On a visit to a company whose operations are based on peat, we couldn’t avoid discussing government regulations around the world that are phasing out peat excavation from boglands due to environmental considerations. As peat is the main component of casing soil, it is interes- ting to consider the situation in Poland and how Wokas sees the future regarding this. They said that there must be proper legislation regulating this issue but even then there are still huge peat bogs all over Russia and Belarus, countries resting on peat. Some pressure might be felt from the market in line with environmental and trade issues which forces producers not to buy from these countries and develop alternatives instead.
