56 ▶ PIG PROGRESS | Volume 37, No. 2, 2021 Mulberry leaf as feed ingredient
In the search for alternative ingredients for pig diets, Chinese researchers recent- ly put mulberry leaves to the test. Mul- berry leaf powder, they concluded, can be used as a feed ingredient for finishing pigs. The scientists, attached to several research institutes in Changsha, pub- lished their study in the peer-reviewed journal Animal Nutrition. The researchers concluded that including dietary mul- berry at levels below 12% “did not
change the growth performance, but improved the oxidative stability in fin- ishing pigs”. They added that mulberry leaf supplementation “also affected the expression of genes involved in lipid metabolism and mitochondrial uncou- pling in the porcine skeletal muscle. These changes can beneficially regulate the pork fatty acid profile and prevent li- pid oxidation, which has a positive impact on the health of consumers.”
Pigs can do a joystick-operated task
Pigs are capable of learning a video- game task that is operated by a joystick. That was the outcome of US research at Purdue University and the Comparative Cognition Project, which was published in the peer-reviewed journal Frontiers in Psychology. The study involved two Panepinto mi- cro-pigs and two Yorkshire pigs acquir- ing a joystick-operated video-game task. The animals were required to move the cursor to make contact with three-, two- or one-walled targets randomly allocat- ed for position on the monitor, and a feed pellet reward was provided if the cursor collided with a target. The video-task acquisition required con- ceptual understanding of the task, as
well as skilled motor performance. The scientists wrote: “Overall, all pigs performed significantly above chance on one-walled targets, which indicates that, to some extent, all acquired the association between the joystick and cursor movement. That the pigs achieved the level of suc- cess they did on a task that was signifi- cantly outside their normal frame of reference is in itself remarkable, and in- dicative of their behavioral and cogni- tive flexibility. Their high level of social motivation to perform the task was also noteworthy… These results indi- cate that despite dexterity and visual constraints, pigs have the capacity to acquire a joystick-operated video-game task.”
