hit happens. Anybody who’s been inside a pig house knows that apart from pigs, pens contain pig manure. It’s on the walls, on the floor and sometimes pigs themselves are stained as well. Nothing to be dramatic about; that’s just how it is. Yet in marketing circles, manure doesn’t rock. Companies often want their marketing material to be as perfect as possible. After all, these images might also end up in the outside world, so understandably things have to look decent. So at times, when viewing pig pictures supplied by companies, I regularly find myself star-

ing at images of clean pens with all the animals having shiny pink skin. I imagine that the pictures must have been taken straight after the pigs were introduced into the pen, that the photographer went the extra mile to get the ideal angle or, more likely, that the marketing department used Photoshop.


Yet rather than going to great lengths to get the perfect shot, one can also aim to bring a little more perfection to real-


ity. After all, when management is great, manure levels can be kept relatively minimal. And no worries, the outside world will understand if there’s some manure. Even better – outsiders enjoy being able to look and learn for themselves. Great examples of proud farms opening up can be found on pages 30 and 55.
