This edition of Pig Progress has some good info on the situation regarding African Swine Fever (ASF) in two countries that have been confronted with the virus in recent months: the Philippines (page 12) and South Korea (page 16). As you are probably aware, Pig Progress is attempting to plot recent outbreaks of ASF in Asia on an in- teractive map that can be found at www.pigprogress.net. This site allows visitors from around the world to gain an impression of how far the virus has progressed in real time and thus a clearer understanding of the mechanics and speed of its spread. I’m convinced that this type information will enable the global swine indus-


try to be better prepared for what may be coming. The reporting provided by the South Korean authorities de- serves particular credit given that outbreaks there appear to be reported immediately and fully transparently to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).


So, dear reader, this presents an interesting dilemma: what will happen when ASF reaches your country? How will the authorities in your country respond when ASF breaks out there? And when would you agree that they have made the right decisions? Would you applaud it if your government were to share outbreaks with the world? Or would you – for whatever reason – furtively prefer that the authorities should try to keep things quiet? I hope that everyone who appreciates our mapping efforts would still be in favour of the first option, should that unfortunate event occur.
