SIMA: Bulky and heavy vs delicate and precise

here was no shortage of the requisite flashy displays and large imposing stands at the SIMA agriculture mech- anisation trade fair in Paris, often fea-
turing machinery to match. In stark contrast to that were the fair attendees with (very) small stands, with no spectacle, and with fewer smartly dressed people. Yet it is these, often
Weeding down to a few millimetres
The camera and steering system of the Robo- crop in-row weeder designed by British man- ufacturer Garford is now also available on a weeder for delicate crops. The machine removes weeds from crops at distances down to 5 cm between the rows, with course accuracy of 5 mm. Narrower row spacing is probably also possible, according to Garford. The machine on display is for beds of 1.20 m, with a guide price of € 30,000.
Robot weeder for inside and outside
The French machinery manufacturer Carré is working on its high-precision robot weeder Anatis, the successor to the Anatis robot weeder that it developed previously. The Trimble RTK GPS accounts for 80% of the course accuracy, while the rest is provided by two Claas Opticam imaging cameras (on the front and on the sideshift of the lifting arm), which Carré has named Precicam. The robot, with four-wheel drive and four-wheel steer- ing, weighs 100 kilos, and can operate contin- uously for 8 hours on tracks between 1.45 and 2.05 metres wide. The guide price is € 140,000.

Next SIMA edition
The organisers of the trade fair recently changed their strategy. The event will be moving to the autumn, with the next one being held on 8 to 12 November 2020. These dates will overlap with the EIMA trade fair in Bologna, Italy, which will be held on 11 to 15 November.
The SIMA, now in its 78th year, took place at the end of February
in Paris, France. The heavy mechanisation trade fair never fails to wow its audience. However, there were also less well-known technologies on show that offer benefits for increasingly precise farming methods.
much smaller, businesses that are the initiators of genuine technological developments. They are less about heavier and wider machinery
with lots of horsepower, and more about sen- sitive electronics that benefit precision and smart working.
